The Day of Small Things
“Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?” - Zechariah 4:10
There’s a moment most of us never post about. It’s the part of the work nobody sees. The email answered before the sun’s up. The chair set back in its row. The phone call to check on someone who may never know you called. Small things. The kind that don’t feel like they’re building anything at all.
Zerubbabel knew that feeling.
He was rebuilding the temple after the exile. The people had come home to rubble, and when they finally laid the new foundation, it wasn’t much to look at. The old-timers who remembered Solomon’s temple actually wept, because this one looked so small next to the one they’d lost. Same God. Smaller footprint. It’s easy to stare at a modest beginning and decide it doesn’t measure up.
Then God speaks. And He doesn’t apologize for the size of it. He asks a question instead. “Who dares despise the day of small things?”
Look at what He’s doing there. He isn’t tolerating the small beginning. He’s defending it.
The verse says the eyes of the Lord rejoice to see the work in Zerubbabel’s hand. Not the finished temple. The work in progress. The plumb line. The half-built wall. God was glad about the very part everyone else found underwhelming.
We forget that. We want the ribbon cutting. God is already delighted at the foundation.
A few verses earlier He’d told them how the whole thing would get built. “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord.” That’s the secret. The temple didn’t rise because the crew was impressive. It rose because God was in it. Which means the small, faithful thing you did this week was never small to Him. It was Spirit and stone. It counted.
Here’s what that does to a Tuesday. You don’t have to see the whole building to know your part matters. You just have to lay your stone. Faithfully. Today. Then again tomorrow.
Legacy doesn’t begin someday. It begins today, in the ordinary work you were tempted to despise.
So don’t despise it. God doesn’t.
For reflection
What small, unseen thing are you tempted to believe doesn’t count?
Can you picture God rejoicing over it right now, unfinished as it is?
Prayer
Father, thank You that You don’t wait for the finished building to be pleased. You rejoice over the foundation. Help me lay my stone today without needing anyone to see it. Remind me that it’s not by my might, but by Your Spirit. And let me trust that the small, faithful things are adding up to something You are building. Amen.
